A pipe that has burst or is leaking and you cannot stop it, sewage backing up into drains or fixtures, no water to the whole house, or water near outlets or the electrical panel. Usually where the water line enters the house, often in a garage, basement, utility room or crawl space, or in a meter box near the street. A ball valve closes with a quarter turn, a gate valve closes by turning clockwise. Find it before you need it.

Usually a partial clog building up in the line. One slow fixture points to a local clog, several at once point to the main line. A gurgle can also mean a venting problem. Avoid chemical drain cleaners, they can damage pipes and make the job harder for whoever opens the line.
