Most electrical problems give warning signs before they turn into something bigger. A warm outlet, a buzzing switch, or a breaker that trips every time the microwave runs are all signals worth checking. We understand, it's not something anyone wants to spend their day dealing with. It is an expense, time out of your day, and you have to explain to the kids why some random guy is wandering around your home muttering numbers to himself.

However, these are the real issues that can become major repairs if left alone. Outlets can burn, panels can break. These parts of the home simply have to run and work properly. MAS Pro is here to help you navigate the best and most affordable practical solution that fits your life and home. No upsell, no BS. We are a small family business focused on building lasting relationships and being the service provider you trust and come back to. We are not salesmen, we are electricians first and foremost.

Our electricians troubleshoot the whole circuit, not only the spot where the symptom shows up. We repair outlets and switches, restore power to dead circuits, fix GFCI outlets that will not reset, track down flickering and dimming lights, and handle electrical panel repair when the issue starts at the source. Outdoor outlet trouble is one of the most common calls we get in Southwest Washington, and we cover the usual causes in why your outdoor outlet is not working.

Every repair is done by licensed electrician Derrik and done to code. In Washington, electrical permits run through the Department of Labor and Industries, and when a repair needs one, we take care of it so you do not have to.

Electrical repair is not a good place for DIY. A fix that looks simple, like swapping in a bigger breaker, can create a fire risk hidden inside your walls. If something feels off, smells hot, or keeps coming back, call us at (360) 907-3412 and we will get it sorted out the right way.

Electrical troubleshooting

Something stopped working? Start here.

Quick answers to the electrical problems we get called about most in Vancouver, Woodland, and across Clark and Cowlitz County. Each one tells you what to check and how soon to call.

Safety first: burning smell, smoke, sparks, or a hot panel? Turn off the breaker if it's safe, then call (360) 907-3412. If you see smoke or flames, get out and call 911.

01

Power and breakers

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

It's usually one of three things: too much running on one circuit, a short in a device or wire, or a ground fault. Unplug what's on that circuit and reset the breaker once. If it trips again right away, leave it off.

Why won't my breaker reset?

Push the handle all the way to OFF first, then back to ON. If it snaps back or won't stay on, something on that circuit is still faulted or the breaker is worn out. Don't force it or hold it on.

Why did half my house lose power?

Check the main breaker and look for any tripped breakers first. If everything looks normal, the problem may be at the utility connection or a failing main connection. Call your utility and an electrician.

02

Outlets and GFCIs

Why is my outlet not working?

Look for a tripped GFCI outlet nearby, including in the garage, bathrooms, or outside, then check the panel. If neither brings it back, a loose connection in that outlet or one further up the circuit is the likely cause.

Why won't my GFCI reset?

A GFCI won't reset if it has no power, if the problem that tripped it is still there, or if the GFCI itself has failed. Check the breaker, unplug everything on that outlet, and press reset firmly.

Why is my outlet hot or sparking?

Stop using it. Heat, brown or melted spots, or repeated sparks mean a connection is failing. Turn off the breaker if you can do it safely and call an electrician.

Lights, switches, and smells

Why are my lights flickering?

One light flickering is usually the bulb, the fixture, or a dimmer that doesn't match LED bulbs. Lights flickering across the whole house point to a loose connection at the panel or service.

Why is my light switch not working?

Check the bulb and the breaker first. A switch that stays dead, works only sometimes, or feels warm usually has a worn switch or a loose connection behind it.

What does a burning smell or buzzing mean?

A burning smell, or buzzing from an outlet, switch, or panel, means something is overheating or arcing. Turn off the breaker if you can do it safely and call. If you see smoke, get out and call 911.

When is an electrical problem an emergency?

An electrical problem is an emergency if you smell burning, see smoke or sparks, feel heat at an outlet, switch, or panel, hear buzzing from the panel, or see water near electrical equipment. Turn off the breaker if you can do it safely and call us. If there's smoke or fire, get out and call 911. See our emergency electrical services and why electricity and water are a dangerous combination.

The power is out in my whole house. What should I check first?

When the whole house loses power, first look outside to see if your neighbors have power. If they're out too, it's a utility outage, so call Clark Public Utilities or Cowlitz PUD. If it's only your house, check the main breaker. If the main is on and you still have no power, call an electrician. Our guide on what to do first in a whole-house outage walks through it, and here's how to prepare before storm season.

I got a small shock from an outlet or switch. Is that serious?

Yes, a shock from an outlet or switch is serious. It means current is going somewhere it shouldn't, often because of a missing ground, a damaged device, or a wiring fault. Stop using it, turn off the breaker, and have it checked. Here's what a ground wire does and how GFCI protection prevents shocks.

What are the most common electrical repairs?

The most common electrical repairs are dead outlets, breakers that keep tripping, flickering lights, switches that stop working, GFCIs that won't reset, and worn or damaged panels. Many start with a loose connection or a short. See the most common electrical hazards in homes, what causes short circuits, and the warning signs of a failing circuit breaker.

Should I repair or replace my electrical panel?

Repair makes sense when one breaker or connection has failed in an otherwise healthy panel. Replacement makes more sense when the panel is out of space, keeps having problems, shows heat damage, or is a brand with a history of failures. Our guide to panel repair vs. replacement covers the signs, along with how to tell if your panel is safe.

Is my older panel brand a problem?

Some older panel brands are a known problem. Federal Pacific, Zinsco, Challenger, and Pushmatic panels come up often in older Clark County homes. Start with our electrical panel recall list, then see the brand guides for Federal Pacific, Zinsco, Challenger, and Pushmatic.

Does aluminum wiring need to be repaired?

Aluminum branch wiring from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s is prone to loose, overheating connections. It doesn't always need to be replaced, but the connections need the right repair method and the right connectors. See our guides to aluminum wiring in Clark County homes and whether aluminum wiring is dangerous.

Can a power surge damage my electrical system?

Yes, a power surge can damage your electrical system. Surges from storms, utility switching, or large appliances can damage electronics, outlets, and breakers. Whole-home surge protection at the panel adds a layer of defense. Here are the common causes of power surges and how home surge protection works.

Why do my lights dim when the AC or a big appliance turns on?

A quick, slight dim when a large motor starts can be normal. Dimming that is noticeable, lasts, or is getting worse can point to a loose connection or a circuit or service that is overloaded. Here's how home electrical circuits work, and when an electrical panel replacement becomes the fix.

Do you repair generators and EV chargers?

Yes, MAS Pro Service repairs both. We handle standby generator repair and EV charger service. If your generator hasn't run in a while, here's whether backup generators need maintenance.

How much does electrical repair cost?

The cost of electrical repair depends on what's causing the problem, how easy it is to reach, the parts involved, and whether the work needs a permit. A loose connection at one outlet is a very different job than a damaged panel. We find the cause first and explain the options and price before any work starts.

Do electrical repairs need a permit in Washington?

Some electrical repairs need a permit in Washington. In Clark County, electrical permits go through Washington State L&I, not the county. We'll tell you before we start if your repair needs one. Our guide to electrical permits in Clark County has the details, and here are the risks of unpermitted electrical work.

Should I call an electrician or a handyman?

For anything beyond changing a bulb or resetting a breaker, call an electrician. Wiring, outlets, switches, breakers, and panels are electrical work, and mistakes can cause fires or shocks. This guide explains when you need an electrician vs. a handyman.

How do I know an electrician is qualified?

Check their license with Washington State L&I, read recent reviews, and ask about permits and how they diagnose problems. Here's how to check if an electrician is licensed, the questions to ask before hiring, and why reviews matter. More on choosing a qualified electrical contractor.

Can I fix electrical problems myself?

Resetting a breaker or GFCI and changing a bulb are fine. Beyond that, the risks go up fast, and some common fixes create new hazards. Read why you can’t just put in a bigger breaker, how to replace an outlet the right way, and our simple safety checks for homeowners.

I'm buying a home. What electrical problems should I look for?

Look at the panel brand and age, signs of heat or scorching, outlets without GFCI protection in wet areas, aluminum wiring, and any work that looks unpermitted. Here's what to look for in a home’s electrical system.

What areas do you serve for electrical repair?

We serve Vancouver, Ridgefield, Battle Ground, Camas, Brush Prairie, Woodland, Longview, Kalama, and nearby communities in Clark and Cowlitz County. See our full service area.
